Dr. Jeannie Bailey and her team at the Musculoskeletal Research Consortium (METRiCS) develop precision-based digital health tools to enhance clinician decision-making and patient engagement. Their research covers spaceflight-induced spinal instability, in-clinic biomechanical assessments, predictive modeling for post-op complications, muscle quality, biomechanical dysfunction, and pain phenotypes from real-world data.

OrthoCAP is an innovative mobile application designed to monitor your pain levels and recovery progress in real time, providing a more comprehensive picture of your health journey. By capturing movement data and self-reported outcomes, the app helps clinicians and researchers better understand your unique experiences with recovery. 

By participating in this study, you will gain insight into your health while also making an important contribution to global research on chronic pain.

Who is eligible?


Patients undergoing consultations, planned treatment or surgery at UCSF. You must be an adult (18+) and have either:

  • Lower Back Pain (LBP) or other spinal condition
  • Hip or Knee (lower extremity) pain
  • Sport-related injury

1. What is the OrthoCAP app?
OrthoCAP is a phone app from UCSF that helps you track your pain, movement, and recovery over time.
2. How does it help me?
It gives your doctor a better picture of how you’re doing so they can adjust your care if needed.
3. Who can use the app?
Adults (18+) getting care at UCSF for back, hip, knee, or sports-related pain.
4. How do I sign up?
You can enroll through your doctor, online, or by emailing orthocapucsf@gmail.com.
5. What devices can I use it on?
Right now, OrthoCAP only works on Apple devices, such as iPhones and iPads.
6. What will I be asked to do?
You’ll answer short questions each day about your pain, movement, and how you’re feeling.
7. Is my information safe?
Yes, your data is private and secure. Only your care team can see it.
8. What if I skip a day?
No problem — just pick up where you left off.
9. Will my doctor see my answers?
Yes, your care team can use your info to help guide your treatment.
