Visiting Medical Student Scholarships

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers a Visiting Elective Scholarship Program (VESP) for fourth-year medical students who have shown dedication to fostering community, building a collaborative culture, and engaging with diverse populations. If you would like to apply, please do so by completing this application. Applicants should also demonstrate alignment with UCSF’s PRIDE Values and have applied for a visiting Sub-Internship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. These applications are due by May 1st, 2026. Decisions will be made by May 18th.

Important dates, deadlines, and contact information

The UCSF Visiting Student Clerkship program begins on June 1, 2026. For any questions, please contact Medical Student Coordinator Dan Peterson (dan.peterson@ucsf.edu).

The 2026 academic year program is as follows:

  • Rising 4th-Year Medical Students: Applications are now open in VSLO
  • Application Review: UCSF and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will begin processing applications after March 31, 2026. Decisions on rotation blocks June - September are made after March 31, 2026. October block application decisions are made after May 4, 2026.

  • June 1–28, 2026
  • June 29–July 26, 2026
  • July 27–August 23, 2026
  • August 31–September 27, 2026
  • September 28–October 25, 2026

Join: Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG)

The Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG) coordinates activities to connect, educate and collaborate with students interested in orthopaedic surgery. Our goal is to provide opportunities such as courses, lunchtime lectures, socials and information sessions, while also helping connect you with faculty and residents in the department based on your interests.
