SAN FRANCISCO (June 16, 2026) — Physicians, athletic trainers and medical volunteers from the UCSF Race Medical and UCSF Sports Medicine teams provided medical support for over 1,600 athletes during the 46th annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and Sokin T100 San Francisco Triathlon events held June 6–7, 2026 in San Francisco.

Widely regarded as one of the world's most challenging triathlons, the Escape from Alcatraz course begins with a 1.5-mile swim from a boat drop in San Francisco Bay. Athletes then complete an 18-mile cycling course through the Presidio, Great Highway and Golden Gate Park before finishing with an 8-mile run that includes Baker Beach and the iconic Sand Ladder.  The day before Escape from Alcatraz, 20 professional triathletes participated in the 3rd Professional Triathletes Organisation T100 race series.  This is one in a series of professional races that culminate in the championships in Doha, Qatar in December 2026.

UCSF medical teams supported participants ranging from elite professional triathletes to first-time competitors, providing on-course medical coverage, injury assessment and sports medicine expertise throughout the weekend.

"These events are a tremendous example of community service and teamwork," said Anthony Luke, MD, MPH, who is a primary care sports medicine specialist and Director of the UCSF Human Performance Center.  He has been the longtime leader of the UCSF Race Medical Team. "Our volunteers come from many different disciplines, but they share a common goal: helping athletes safely achieve something extraordinary. We are proud to support these events and the communities they bring together."

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery extends its appreciation to the physicians, athletic trainers and volunteers who dedicated their time to supporting athlete safety and event operations.

Special recognition goes to Anthony Luke, MD, MPH, and athletic trainers Michael Mayes, MS, ATC; Garrison Chan, MS, ATC; Hannah Oyedeji, ATC; and Morgan Gilfillan, MS, ATC, for coordinating UCSF's medical and sports medicine support efforts.  Special thanks to all the volunteers representing different departments including Orthopedics, Anesthesia, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Physical therapy, Athletic training, Nutrition as well as all the students and trainees.
