Thank you for your interest in the University of California, San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency training program. The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is recognized as one of the leading academic orthopaedic departments in the United States. The program is rich in history and has played a prominent role in the development of orthopaedic surgery in the United States. 

The Orthotic and Prosthetic Center at UCSF has proven itself on a continual basis as a leader in O&P care, education, research and development. In its 80-year existence, the department has been recognized as a pillar of strength for this institution has been instrumental in the development of the Orthopaedic Department on the whole.

Our structured education is strategically designed to assist residents in achieving a mastery of the O&P profession, by providing a healthy balance of clinical management, research, and administrative responsibilities. We strongly encourage and foster a sense of leadership and personal growth in each resident that will instill the level of clinical confidence necessary to start you on your path to a rewarding future career.

The Orthotic and Prosthetic division at UCSF holds a strong presence in our three main campuses, Parnassus Heights, San Francisco General Hospital, and Mission Bay. Residents have the unique opportunity of rotating through these centers to gain greater clinical exposure and a wider breadth of knowledge from each of our esteemed specialists. This multi-center program affords our residents a well-rounded training experience that is filled with a broadly based and diverse patient population.

Here at UCSF, you will find a house staff whose vigorous enthusiasm for hard work, learning, and teaching is matched only by its collegiality and support for one another. Our mission

Consistent with the educational commitment of the University of California, San Francisco, the mission of the UCSF Orthotic and Prosthetic residency program is to cultivate professional competenceand independent clinical decision-making in a supportive educational environment. This is accomplished by providing residents a structured training program with exposure to a wide array of pathologies in diverse and collaborative clinical settings. 

The UCSF Orthotic and Prosthetic Center, in alliance with the UCSF Office of Diversity and Outreach, strives to create and foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion among our Faculty, Trainees, and Staff. Our mission is to both celebrate and build the diversity within the department, as well as to promote diversity-related initiatives and culturally-competent education and patient care.

The Orthotic and Prosthetic Center at UCSF has proven itself on a continual basis as a leader in O&P care, education, research and development. Our program is a respected and established orthotic and prosthetic residency site. UCSF provides residents with unique opportunities for learning in an academic hospital setting. The hospital is ranked nationally (US News & World Report) in 11 adult and 9 pediatric specialties. Multiple residency positions (both O&P) are filled annually. Due to the institutional and teaching hospital setting, the residencies are specific to one discipline (either orthotics or prosthetics) and are 1-year positions. The resident’s directed study is required to be research based.

The orthotic residents rotate between three locations, spending four months at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, four months at the UCSF Mission Bay Women's and Children's Hospital and four months at the UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus Heights. 

Prosthetic residents are primarily based at the UCSF Orthopedic Institute.

Application process

Applications are accepted via OPRESCAS, October 1 to December 15.

Select candidates will be invited to participate in personal interviews. These candidates will be notified by mid January.

Interviews will be held in February. (Remote in 2021 due to COVID safety concerns)

Resident selections are made by early March. Residency start date is July 1.
