Watch the 2025 OREF Resident Research Symposium

SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 3, 2025) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery hosted the 2025 Western Region Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Resident Research Symposium on Sept. 24 at UCSF’s Mission Bay Conference Center, bringing together more than 90 orthopaedic residents, faculty, and guests from across the Western region.

Residents presented innovative research spanning sports medicine, arthroplasty, spine, oncology, hand, pediatrics, and trauma. The day included registration and breakfast, multiple research sessions, and a keynote address by Kevin G. Shea, M.D., of Stanford University on pediatric knee dissections, followed by a question-and-answer session, closing remarks, and an awards presentation.
Kyla Petrie, M.D., a UCSF orthopaedic surgery resident, earned first-place honors for her research on pediatric ACL reconstruction. Other award-winning research explored meniscus tears, soft tissue sarcoma, fracture repair, and joint arthroplasty.
