We recognize the significant impact that injuries and deformities can have on a child’s physical, emotional and social well-being. Our pediatric orthopedic specialists treat the full range of conditions from simple fractures and sports injuries to complex spine, hip, neuromuscular conditions and limb deformities that may require major operations. We work with you towards the goals of improving the patient’s quality of life, decreasing pain and enhancing function Based at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco with satellite offices throughout the Bay Area, we provide the comprehensive care and latest treatments one would expect from a leading academic institution with the personal, individualized care that we would want for own children.
Our team
Orthopedics is a specialty where treatment can make a significant difference in a child’s development and life as an adult. Our pediatric specialists are experts in the physical development of children and how a child’s ongoing growth requires care that differs from that of an adult. We treat the common conditions of the extremities and spine such as clubfoot, developmental dysplasia of the hip, and scoliosis. We also treat the many less common disorders such as osteogenesis imperfecta and muccopolysacharoidoses. For children with multiple and complex problems, we embrace a team approach to providing care. We work closely with the Departments of Anesthesiology, Endocrinology, General Surgery, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Rehabilitation Medicine and Rheumatology to provide the most comprehensive care for our patients. Physical therapists, occupational therapists and child life specialists are also an integral part of our multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive treatment approach to our patients. Additionally, collaborations with UCSF clinicians and researchers provide us with access to the latest developments in diagnosing, treating and caring for children with orthopaedic conditions.

Whether you have had an injury, surgery, or otherwise, your healthcare provider has written orders for you to use crutches. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland has created this video as a guideline for safe crutch use. The proper use of crutches seems fairly simple, but if used poorly they can lead to issues such as a new injury or worsening of your current condition. Please feel free to watch all or parts of the video over again until you feel comfortable safely using your crutches. If you have questions, ask your nurse or provider.
The Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes is the first full-service sports medicine program in Northern California to work exclusively with young athletes.
Because growing bones and cartilage are susceptible to injuries unlike those of a skeletally-mature athlete, young athletes must be managed differently from adults. When a young athlete is injured—misuse can lead to disabilities that extend into adulthood.
Our pediatric sports medicine specialists have extensive knowledge and experience in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sports-related injuries in children and adolescents. We offer young athletes the most current and comprehensive medical care and educational programming available.
