About Thomas McNalley, MD

Dr. Tom McNalley is a specialist in both pediatric palliative care and pediatric rehabilitation medicine. In his palliative care practice, he collaborates with a diverse team of providers to optimize quality of life and comfort for children with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses. The team works closely with families to align medical care with what matters most to each child. In rehabilitation, he focuses on addressing physical impairments, helping children function and participate in life as fully as possible. To enhance his patients’ quality of life, he may use medications, physical therapy, therapeutic equipment and a variety of procedures.

McNalley's research explores how children and their families build and sustain resilience in the face of serious illness and hospitalization. His goal is to translate these insights into compassionate, individualized care that meets families’ unique needs.

McNalley earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2004. He completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Washington in 2008, followed by a fellowship in pediatric hospice and palliative medicine at UC San Francisco in 2020. He also holds a master’s degree in German language and literature from the University of Virginia. He is a professor of pediatrics.
