Department welcomes Dr. Jasmine Ng, Pediatric Physiatrist

San Francisco – Sept. 5, 2024 — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery welcomes Dr. Jasmine Ng, a board-certified pediatric physiatrist, to our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation team. Dr. Ng joins the department as an assistant professor.

 About Dr. Jasmine Ng, MD 

Clinical Care 

Dr. Jasmine Ng is a dedicated pediatric physiatrist and assistant professor in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Her clinical expertise includes spasticity management, pediatric spinal cord injuries, and the early diagnosis and treatment of cerebral palsy. Dr. Ng specializes in non-surgical interventions, including botulinum toxin chemodenervation, phenol neurolysis, and ultrasound-guided injections, ensuring that her young patients receive state-of-the-art care tailored to their unique needs.

Before joining UCSF, Dr. Ng was a pediatric physiatrist at the University of Arizona Tucson School of Medicine and practiced at the Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she played a pivotal role in advancing pediatric rehabilitation services.

As director of the Spasticity Injection Program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, she led the development of the hospital’s first multidisciplinary spasticity management clinic. She introduced double-guided botulinum toxin injections using ultrasound and electrical stimulation and was instrumental in implementing the first midazolam minimal sedation ambulatory protocol. In addition, she spearheaded the creation of the Multidisciplinary Early Motor Assessment Clinic in partnership with neurology, advancing early detection and intervention for children at risk of cerebral palsy.

Research Interests 

Dr. Ng is passionate about advancing pediatric rehabilitation and improving care for children with neurological conditions. Her research includes projects on school reentry after pediatric inpatient rehabilitation, focusing on developing evidence-based approaches to support children’s transitions back to educational environments. Dr. Ng has published work on topics such as pediatric anoxic brain injury and trends in stage distribution for non-small cell lung cancer. She has also contributed to the growing body of knowledge on rehabilitation techniques for pediatric patients, with presentations at national and international conferences.

 Education 

Dr. Ng completed her fellowship in pediatric rehabilitation medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where she specialized in the care of children with complex rehabilitation needs. She completed her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation/Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in West Orange, New Jersey, where she served as a resident instructor and lead organizer for the institute’s annual research fair. Dr. Ng earned her Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and holds a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry with a minor in public health from Washington University in St. Louis, where she graduated summa cum laude.

Educational and Outreach Activities 

Dr. Ng is committed to education and has delivered numerous invited lectures on pediatric rehabilitation topics, including presentations at the Barrow Neurological Institute’s Neuroscience Education Symposium and Cerebral Palsy Family Education Day. She has served as a resident instructor for musculoskeletal ultrasound and EMG/NCS workshops and as an assistant lecturer of human anatomy during her medical mission work in Yunnan, China. Dr. Ng’s outreach efforts extend internationally, including her work as a medical volunteer and trainer for pediatric rehabilitation centers in China.

 Service and Leadership 

Dr. Ng has been actively involved in professional organizations, including the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, where she served on the International Affairs Committee. She is dedicated to expanding access to rehabilitation care for underserved populations and has participated in medical missions, providing vital care and training in pediatric rehabilitation.

Dr. Ng sees patients at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland and San Francisco, where she continues to advance pediatric rehabilitation through innovative care and research.
