Outreach at UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery offers several programs that reach out to the broader community throughout the Bay Area and Northern California.
Our outreach efforts are far-reaching, ranging from maintaining contact with our past program graduates, to making sports safer for Bay Area athletes, to the far shores of Africa, increasing global awareness and assisting underserved countries through our volunteerism programs.
The faculty and staff are committed to advancing orthopaedic care worldwide. Through faculty-sponsored outreach programs and our orthopaedic surgery residency elective, we hope to foster a lifelong spirit of volunteerism and promote orthopaedic training programs nationally and internationally.
Amputee Comprehensive Training program
The ACT program assists those affected by limb loss in maximizing their physical and functional mobility. With two integral components, rehabilitation and outreach, the ACT program offers both the community and the tools to make a complete recovery following amputation
The UCSF Sports Concussion Program is the region’s premier center for evaluating and treating athletes, who have suffered a sports-related concussion. Our team includes experts from sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neuropsychology, neurology, physical therapy and athletic training. With this combined expertise, we diagnose and treat athletes with sports concussion and help them safely return to school, work, and play
The Biomechanical Testing Facility (BTF) works with academic and industry partners to conduct high quality research that leads to advancements in basic scientific knowledge and clinical applications in orthopaedics.
Digital Orthopaedics Conference San Francisco
The Digital Orthopaedics Conference San Francisco (DOCSF) is a one day conference that focuses on technology, leadership and innovation in the speicalty of orthopaedics.
Health Information Technology Organization
The UCSF Health Information Information Technology Organization focuses on digital technology in Orthopaedic Surgery.
The Human Performance Center serves primarily as a research facility, partnering with other research labs, scientists, and companies around UCSF, and the entire Bay Area, to carry out studies in the areas of biomechanics, exercise physiology, and sleep & athletic performance.
Institute for Global Orthopedics and Traumatology
The Institute for Global Orthopedics and Traumatology (IGOT) partners with institutions around the world to find sustainable solutions to these issues through research, collaboration, and capacity building.
International Olympic Committee
UCSF Sports Medicine's Dr. Christina Allen, MD, serves as team physician for the U.S. Olympics Taekwondo Team.
Dr. R. Richard Coughlin, MD, Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and attending orthopaedic surgeon at the San Francisco General Hospital, has implemented a program to expose orthopaedic residents to an overseas volunteer experience early in their training with the hope of continuing involvement in such experiences throughout their careers.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has partnered with the Oberlin Dance Company to provide much needed medical care and advice to dancers. Dance Medicine is a focused art, which is being expanded in our Dance Medicine Center at our Mission Bay Facility
The Perry Initiative is committed to inspiring young women to be leaders in the fields of Orthopaedic Surgery and Engineering by sponsoring hands-on outreach programs across the country for high school women.
The UCSF PlaySafe Sports Medicine Program provide a safe and positive environment for athletic pursuits, to facilitate access to the highest quality sports medicine care, and to encourage physical and mental growth by empowering student-athletes to lead balanced, physically active lifestyles.
PlaySafe Cardiac Physicals for Highschool Athletes
PlaySafe provides free physicals in the spring and fall for high school studentathletes through an interdisciplinary team of UCSF Sports Medicine Center physicians, orthopaedic surgeons and athletic trainers at the Orthopaedic Institute on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. These wellness checks can find underlying medical abnormalities and even help prevent sudden death.
Orthopaedic Surgical Osseointegration Society
The Orthopaedic Surgical Osseointegration Society (OSOS) seeks to foster and promote knowledge amongst health care professionals of the process by which bone attaches to metallic implants used in orthopaedic reconstructions.
RunSafe is a sports wellness program for runners focusing on personalized health advice, injury prevention, and performance enhancement. Using assessment and monitoring tools, along with a trusted network of experts, RunSafe provides runners with practical advice on the best practices to help runners achieve their individual goals.
Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes
The UCSF Sports Medicine Center for Young Athletes is a specially-designated facility dedicated to the care, treatment, and education of young athletes in the Bay Area. Currently, there are three facilities located in Oakland, Walnut Creek and San Ramon.
The UCSF Race Medical Team is an organized group of volunteers from UCSF and outside that provide the highest quality race medical care to large mass participation events. UCSF is the official provider of health care for the largest races in the Bay Area.
UCSF-Golden State Warriors Basketball Camp for Amputees
The annual program provides a basketball camp run by the coaching team of the Golden State Warriors for amputees. The event is free and open to both children and adults.
