Endocrinologist Roger Long, MD, to Lead UCSF Bone Health Program

Program will drive innovation in care for skeletal health, metabolic bone disorders

SAN FRANCISCO (May 22, 2025) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is excited to announce that Dr. Roger Long will take on a leadership role in the UCSF Bone Health Program. Dr. Long will hold dual appointments in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as well as the UCSF Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology.

“The UCSF Bone Health Program is an expansion of the principles of the Orthopedics Skeletal Health Service. This unique program cares for patients of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics, focusing on preventing bone disease and improving skeletal health outcomes by integrating bone health services across UCSF,” said Dr. Long, who began his new role effective April 1, 2025.

“Dr. Long’s leadership will play a pivotal role in advancing the UCSF Bone Health Program, where he will continue to drive innovation in skeletal health and metabolic bone disorders,” said Dr. C. Benjamin Ma, chair of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “His deep knowledge, combined with his compassionate, patient-centered approach, makes him an invaluable asset to both our team and the patients we serve. I am excited to see how his leadership will elevate the quality of care and research within the UCSF Bone Health Program.”

Dr. Roger Long is a skilled endocrinologist with a specialized focus on bone health and metabolic bone disorders. His comprehensive approach to care extends to both adult and pediatric patients, with a strong commitment to improving skeletal health. Dr. Long’s academic journey began at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1999. Following this, he completed his Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at the University of California San Diego in 2003. To advance his skills in endocrinology, he created and completed a unique combined Medicine and Pediatrics Endocrinology fellowship training program at University of California San Francisco in 2007. His training at UCSF included a post-doctoral fellowship funded by NASA to investigate the impact of mechanical loading on hormonal signaling in bone. Over time he has developed an immense expertise and passion for the care of patients with bone health conditions across all ages.  Dr. Long is dual board certified in Pediatric Endocrinology by the American Board of Pediatrics and Endocrinology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

About UCSF Bone Health Program

The UCSF Bone Health Program will strive to enhance the capacity at UCSF to care for a wide array of patients with impaired bone health conditions, including those with primary or secondary bone disorders manifesting increased fracture risk or surgical interventions. It will create a collaborative environment for the myriad of bone health providers within our surgical and medical subspecialities. Our goal will be to provide comprehensive and integrative care that aligns multifaceted resources, clinics, and services, including laboratory, physical therapy, biomedical imaging, and nutrition, with the specific needs of a patient and results in the cutting edge of patient care for bone health. Portals will be available to disseminate educational resources that empower primary care and specialty providers and patients to engage proactively and continue as vested partners in their management of bone health. This program also aims to meet our educational and research mission pillars and establish standards of care that will improve the quality of bone health beyond UCSF.
