About Tina Mai

Pronouns: she/her
Hometown: Montclair, California
Training Background: BS - General Biology
Currently: 3rd Year Medical Student - University of California, San Fransisco
Where I am in life right now: I'm currently in a research year based in Hanoi, Vietnam, focusing on
health equity and resourceful approaches to surgical care. This
experience has deepened my commitment to addressing disparities in
access to safe, effective surgery.
Research Interests: My research centers on understanding health disparities—how patients navigate complex health systems, and where barriers to care exist. I’m particularly interested in how innovation and technology can improve outcomes, especially in under-resourced or systemically marginalized communities.
Hobbies: Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing tennis and hosting dinner parties. In the winter, I love to ski and reread "Tuesday with Morrie".

Mai T, Julian K, Ward D, Kamal RN, Shapiro LM. An Analysis of the Study Participants
and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Used to Inform Clinical Practice Guidelines
for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis. Journal of Arthroplasty. April 2025
We evaluated the reporting of linguistic, racial, and ethnic demographic characteristics
of the studies utilized to inform hip and knee osteoarthritis clinical practice guidelines
(CPGs). There is minimal reporting of such characteristics in the CPG informing
literature. This paper underscores the need for improved and standardized reporting of
demographic data and the methods of adaptation of patient-reported outcome measure
(PROMs).
