Perry Initiative Outreach Programs
Perry Initiative Medical Student Outreach Program
The Perry Initiative is committed to building the talent pipeline in orthopaedic surgery and engineering, two interrelated fields that need innovative thinkers and problem solvers. We offer interactive, extracurricular outreach programs from high school through medical school, including POP, MSOP, and PVE, each of which is described in more detail below. Programs are open to individuals from all backgrounds and are free to attend.
The Perry Initiative's Perry Outreach Programs (POP) expose high school students to exciting careers in orthopaedic surgery and engineering. These day-long, hands on programs feature mock orthopaedic surgeries, biomechanical engineering experiments, and interactive talks from prominent engineers and surgeons. POP participants network with mentors and near-peers who are pursing STEM careers in medicine and engineering.
The Perry Initiative's Medical Student Outreach Program (MSOP) encourages medical students to pursue careers in orthopaedic surgery. During this evening-long program, participants hear from residents and attending surgeons, discuss pathways into orthopaedic surgery, and participate in hands-on surgical skills sessions.
The Perry Virtual Experience (PVE) is an interactive online experience for high school and college-aged students who are interested in pursing careers in orthopaedics and/or engineering. POP alumni are welcome to attend, as well as individuals who have yet to experience our in-person programs. PVE participants will hear from leaders in these fields and dive into online mock orthopaedic surgery simulations and biomechanics experiments. PVE sessions are first-come, first-served and require no application. Simply register for a PVE session via our program calendar.
