About Madeline MacKechnie, PhD, MA

Dr. Madeline MacKechnie is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF and investigates global orthopaedic trauma care in lower-resourced settings. Dr. MacKechnie earned her PhD in Medical Sciences from Erasmus University. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree (graduated Summa cum Laude) in International Development Studies from York University and Master’s degree in Global Development Studies with a focus on Health Equity from Queen’s University.

Dr. MacKechnie joined UCSF in 2016 to support the Department’s international academic outreach initiative, the Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (IGOT). Since 2021, she has served as IGOT’s Director of Global Programs, supporting clinical research and educational programs focused on orthopaedic trauma care, particularly in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). In line with the Department’s international mission, Dr. MacKechnie’s focus has been on creating sustainable academic programs with an aim to improve the standard of care globally. Her research addresses surgical clinical care, particularly for musculoskeletal injuries, and surgeon education in lesser-resourced settings worldwide.

She has been instrumental in the creation of the Association of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons in the Americas (Asociación de Cirujanos Traumatólogos de las Américas; ACTUAR), a collaborative network of orthopaedic surgeons in Latin America dedicated to building research capacity, and the Consortium of Orthopaedic Academic Traumatologists (COACT), an association of orthopaedic surgeons in the United States and Canada committed to improving global academic partnerships. Dr. MacKechnie has served as a reviewer for scientific grants and peer-reviewed journals, co-authored articles in high-impact publications, and been an active member of national and international academic organizations.
