Soroudi D, Xiao A, Lalchandani G, Santiesteban L, Stash N, Shapiro LM. Language Barriers in Orthopaedic Surgery: A Systematic Review of Postoperative Outcomes. Journal of Surgical Orthopaedic Advances. In Press July 2025. This paper systematically reviews the association of language barriers with postoperative orthopaedic care and outcomes. We identified nineteen studies demonstrating that language barriers are associated with increased length of stay, discharge to rehabilitation or skilled nursing facilities, lower patient engagement with electronic health platforms, and worse pain and functional outcomes as reported by PROMs. We also highlight promising modifiable interventions such as interpreter usage and multilingual chatbots, which have shown potential in reducing Emergency Department visits, readmission rates, and improving informed consent quality. We hope this study emphasizes the critical need for targeted interventions and standardized definitions in future research to address these significant healthcare disparities.
