Internationally recognized scientist to lead interdisciplinary center advancing musculoskeletal discovery, collaboration, and translational research

SAN FRANCISCO (July 17, 2026) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is proud to announce the appointment of Ralph Marcucio, PhD, as Interim Director of the UCSF Musculoskeletal Center, where he will lead one of the university's premier interdisciplinary research communities dedicated to accelerating discoveries that improve musculoskeletal health.

Effective immediately, Dr. Marcucio succeeds Christopher Hernandez, PhD, whose leadership helped strengthen the Center's collaborative research environment and expand its impact across the university.

"We are grateful to Dr. Hernandez for his leadership, dedication, and many contributions to the Musculoskeletal Center," said Dr. C. Benjamin Ma, chair of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. "His vision and commitment have helped strengthen our musculoskeletal research community and position the Center for continued success."

As Interim Director, Dr. Marcucio will guide the Center's mission to connect researchers across UCSF's schools, campuses, and departments while advancing basic, translational, computational, and clinical musculoskeletal research. The Center serves as a hub for scientific collaboration, education, and public engagement, bringing together investigators committed to accelerating discovery and translating research into improved patient care.

"The UCSF Musculoskeletal Center has built an extraordinary community of scientists and clinicians who share a common goal of improving musculoskeletal health through collaboration and innovation," said Dr. Marcucio. "I look forward to building on that foundation and supporting the next generation of discoveries."

The Center is focused on fostering scientific discovery, expanding interdisciplinary collaboration, increasing research funding, supporting the development of early-career investigators, and engaging the broader community in musculoskeletal science. Through these efforts, it strengthens partnerships that bridge laboratory research and clinical medicine while creating new opportunities for innovation across UCSF.

Among its key priorities are advancing tissue regeneration, developing data science approaches to musculoskeletal biology and medicine, understanding the role of musculoskeletal tissues in aging and systemic health, and addressing the disproportionate burden of musculoskeletal disease experienced by women and historically underserved communities.

"By bringing together expertise from diverse scientific disciplines, the Center aims to accelerate discoveries that lead to new diagnostics, therapies, and strategies to improve quality of life," Dr. Marcucio said.

The UCSF Musculoskeletal Center supports investigators through a network of shared scientific resources, including the Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology and Medicine (CCMBM), Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Study Design Core, Imaging Core, and Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics Core. Together, these programs provide researchers with specialized expertise, advanced technologies, mentorship, and collaborative opportunities that strengthen musculoskeletal research across the university.

About Ralph Marcucio, PhD

An internationally recognized skeletal biologist, Dr. Marcucio has served on the UCSF faculty since 2003 and is a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His research has advanced understanding of bone regeneration, fracture healing, skeletal development, and tissue repair, while his commitment to mentoring students and early-career investigators has helped prepare the next generation of musculoskeletal scientists.

Throughout his career, Dr. Marcucio has championed collaborative science, bringing together investigators with diverse expertise to address some of the most pressing challenges in musculoskeletal medicine.
