Department welcomes Michael Davies, MD, Assistant Professor of Sports Medicine

 

San Francisco – Sept. 3, 2024 — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is pleased to welcome Michael Davies, MD, a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon, sports medicine specialist, and avid researcher. Dr. Davies joins the department as an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Michael R. Davies is an assistant professor in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, specializing in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. He provides care at both the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where his expertise in minimally invasive procedures helps patients achieve optimal recovery with reduced downtime.

Dr. Davies’ clinical care focuses on complex shoulder and knee problems, as well as common sports-related injuries affecting patients of all ages and athletic levels. With a patient-centered approach, he emphasizes personalized treatment plans that promote swift recovery and long-term joint health. His commitment to evidence-based medicine ensures that patients benefit from the latest advancements in sports medicine and arthroscopic techniques.

Dr. Davies earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Stanford University, graduating with distinction and departmental honors. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at UCSF and a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, where he served as an assistant team physician for the New York Knicks and New York Liberty.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Davies is an accomplished researcher in the field of orthopaedic surgery. His research focuses on the role of mesenchymal stem cells in tissue regeneration, particularly in applications related to rotator cuff injuries. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Mauer Award for Outstanding Chief Resident, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) Excellence in Research Award, and the AOSSM Caubaud Memorial Award for basic science research. He has been awarded multiple research grants, including the AOSSM Young Investigator Award. His work has been widely published and presented at national and international conferences. His ongoing research continues to explore innovative treatments for muscle degeneration, using cutting-edge technology, including single-cell RNA sequencing, to characterize stem cell populations within tissues and leverage their regenerative properties.

Outside of work, Dr. Davies is an accomplished pianist. He also enjoys hiking, sports, and cooking for his family and friends. He is passionate about teaching and mentoring those interested in orthopaedic surgery and basic science/translational research.
