UCSF Sports Medicine expands care to serve downtown San Francisco, Mill Valley

May 31, 2019 (SAN FRANCISCO) – The UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery is pleased to announce an expansion of Sports Medicine services to provide care to patients in both downtown San Francisco and Mill Valley in Marin County.

Orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists Dr. Nicholas Colyvas, MD, and Dr. Elly LaRoque, MD, and primary care sports medicine specialist Dr. Kristin Wingfield, MD, will be provide care for patients at UCSF’s downtown Sports Medicine Clinic at 490 Post Street, Suite 900 in San Francisco.  Dr. Wingfield will also be providing care at UCSF’s Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine clinic, conveniently located at the Strawberry Village Shopping Center in Mill Valley.

About the team

Recognized as a leader in the field of meniscus repair, Dr. Nicholas Colyvas is an orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the knee and shoulder.  In clinical practice, he is actively involved in evaluating and using new techniques and devices for meniscus repair, frequently treating complex or challenging meniscus cases and allowing for preservation where resection would typically have occurred. In addition, Dr. Colyvas has subspecialty interests in shoulder instability, rotator cuff surgery and biceps tendon surgery.  He has extensive experience in treating athletes of all types, both professional and amateur.  

Dr. Colyvas earned his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and he then completed his residency and fellowship in orthopaedic surgery at UCSF.  Dr. Colyvas sees patients at both UCSF Sports Medicine’s downtown location, as well as at the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute at San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus.

Dr. Elly LaRoque is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, who specializes in arthroscopy, rehabilitation of the knee and shoulder, and women’s sports injuries in all age groups and levels – from recreational to elite athletes. Dr. LaRoque most recently practiced at Golden Gate Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in downtown San Francisco. In addition to seeing patients, Dr. LaRoque also serves as team physician for the Academy of Art University.

Dr. LaRoque earned her medical degree at the University of California, Irvine, and completed both her residency and fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at Stanford University Medical School and at Sports Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Medicine Associates (SOAR). Dr. LaRoque sees patients at both UCSF Sports Medicine’s downtown location, as well as at the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute at San Francisco’s Mission Bay campus.

Dr. Kristin Wingfield is a board-certified primary care sports medicine specialist who sees all types of athletic injuries, including acute and overuse, in all age groups from children to masters. Her patients are weekend warriors, active people, recreational to elite athletes, and dancers/performing artists. She enjoys using her extensive experience in elite sports to help patients recover from injuries and return to the activities they love as quickly as possible. Most recently, Dr. Wingfield has practiced primary care sports medicine at Golden Gate Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery.

In addition to seeing patients, Dr. Wingfield serves as team physician for the San Francisco Ballet, Marin Academy High School, and Team TWENTY20 women’s professional cycling team, and she previously cared for Olympic athletes in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Whistler, British Columbia. Dr. Wingfield, who was an elite gymnast on the Canadian national gymnastics team and an elite springboard diver, also performed as a professional acrobat in Cirque Du Soleil. She earned her medical degree and completed her residency in family medicine from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; she then completed fellowship training in Sports Medicine at Stanford University. 

Joining orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, Dr. Drew Lansdown, MD, and primary care sports medicine specialist Dr. Carlin Senter, MD, Dr. Wingfield will primarily see patients at the UCSF Sports Medicine clinics in Mill Valley; additionally, she will be holding clinics at the UCSF Sports Medicine’s downtown location in San Francisco.
