About Utku Kandemir, MD

Utku Kandemir was born in Talas, Türkiye (Turkey). He graduated from Galatasaray Lisesi, a renowned high school in the country. After he received his medical degree from Hacettepe University Medical School, Ankara, Turkey in 1993, he did two years of residency in Internal Medicine at Hacettepe University Medical School. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey in 2000. During his Chief Residency year he spent three months at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania. In 2000 he was awarded the traveling fellowship by EFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology), in Europe which he completed in April of 2000.   After graduating from the orthopaedic surgery residency in 2000, Dr. Kandemir did a research fellowship for 15 months in Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was further trained in clinical management of sports injuries, and joint anatomy and mechanics. Upon returning to his home country, he was appointed as a Clinical Instructor and then Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Hacettepe University Medical Center. With increasing interest in advanced training in trauma, he completed a clinical trauma fellowship at San Francisco General Hospital in 2004-2005. Dr. Kandemir was honored as an Associate Professor by the Council of Advanced Education of Turkey in March 2006.   In 2005, Dr. Kandemir joined the faculty of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) at San Francisco General Hospital.   His areas of expertise include reconstruction after complex trauma. He treats fractures of pelvis, hip, upper extremity (elbow, shoulder, arm and forearm), lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle, thigh and leg), deformities, and posttraumatic infections.  Dr. Kandemir is passionate about developing better teamwork in Orthopaedic Surgery. He is committed to providing the highest quality and most current techniques to patient care and resident education in Orthopaedic Surgery.
