About Andrew John, MD
Clinic Care
Dr. Andrew John is a dedicated physiatrist and Assistant Professor in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. John's clinical expertise includes the performance of nerve conduction studies and electromyography for evaluating neuromuscular issues, non-surgical management of musculoskeletal conditions, post-amputation care, evaluation for orthoses for gait disorders, and interventional management of spasticity, dystonia, and chronic migraine via focal chemodenervation with botulinum toxin and other neurolytic agents. Additionally, Dr. John is skilled in ultrasound-guided intra-articular joint injections and trigger point injections, ensuring personalized and effective treatment for his patients.
Dr. John also has strong interests in global health, specifically in expanding rehabilitation medicine in underdeveloped regions. He spent several months volunteering as a medical professional in Kenya, Nepal, and Burundi. Moreover, he helped develop the training curriculum for Nepal’s first ever post-graduate medical training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and he remains actively involved by giving lectures and providing mentorship to Nepalese medical trainees.
Research Interests
Dr. John's research is focused on advancing rehabilitation medicine, and expanding educational endeavors in the global health context. He has contributed to publications establishing up-to-date management standards for musculoskeletal conditions, case reports documenting rare conditions, and editorials discussing unique perspectives within healthcare. His work also explores the efficacy of various rehabilitation techniques and their impacts on patient outcomes, reflecting his commitment to evidence-based practice and improving rehabilitation protocols. His scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and presentations at national and international conferences. In addition to developing educational protocols in Nepal, he also developed ultrasound curriculum at his residency program.
Education
Before joining UCSF, Dr. John completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Atrium Health/Carolinas Rehabilitation in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he served as the Administrative Chief Resident and received the William Bockenek Resident Excellence Award. Prior to that, he completed his transitional year internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, during which he served as the Transitional Year Chief Resident and was named the Transitional Intern of the Year. Dr. John completed his Doctor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he received the Harry and Hattie Steinmetz Scholarship. He earned a Bachelor of Science with honors in biology from the University of Texas at Dallas. [LP1]
