About Ashraf El Naga, MD
Dr. Ashraf El Naga is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating traumatic injuries, such as broken bones. He has expertise in spinal conditions and treats fractures of the spine, pelvis, arms, and legs. He directs the orthopedic spine service at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and he also sees patients at the UCSF Spine Center at Parnassus.
Dr. El Naga's research focuses on patient recovery following fractures and spine trauma. He also studies how to improve outcomes and long-term physical function for patients who have spinal surgery.
Dr. El Naga's educational journey began at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a Biomedical Engineering emphasis, graduating summa cum laude. He then pursued his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. Following medical school, El Naga completed a surgery internship and an orthopedic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals. He further specialized through fellowships in orthopedic trauma at Hannover Medical School in Germany and the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute at UCSF. Additionally, he completed a spine surgery fellowship at Harborview Medical Center, an affiliate of the University of Washington. Committed to leadership in his field, El Naga has also completed the Orthopaedic Surgery Leadership Development Program at UCSF and the American Orthopaedic Association’s APEX Leadership Program at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business.
