About Robert B. Kiningham, MD

Dr. Bob Kiningham is a board-certified family physician with subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He has extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels — from high school and collegiate teams to elite Olympic development programs. He served as head team physician for Eastern Michigan University and as team physician for the University of Michigan wrestling team, Club Wolverine Swim Club and multiple high school programs across Michigan. He also served as medical director for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s state wrestling championships.

He specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and nonoperative management of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries and is widely recognized for his leadership in developing guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of knee pain and lipid screening in primary care.

Dr. Kiningham’s academic work focuses on sports medicine education, clinical guideline development and advancing scholarly activity among sports medicine fellows. He served as associate director for scholarly activities for the University of Michigan’s sports medicine fellowship, where he previously directed the program for nearly two decades. He is an editorial reviewer for multiple leading journals in family medicine and sports medicine and has been a frequent reviewer and planning committee member for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine’s national meetings.

Dr. Kiningham received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at the University of Michigan Medical School. He then completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Michigan, where he later rose to the rank of clinical professor. He also holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of California, Davis, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from St. Lawrence University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was recognized as an outstanding scholar-athlete.

Dr. Kiningham is a fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians. His honors include the Founders Award from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, recognizing his national leadership in the field.
