SAN FRANCISCO (June 7, 2023) -- 

The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is pleased to welcome Kevin Hwang MD to our faculty as an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery and a provider in our nationally recognized UCSF Spine Center.

Dr. Hwang is an orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery. A board-eligible orthopaedic surgeon, he works with a multidisciplinary team of operative and non-operative spine specialists to provide evidence-based, patient-centric care for a wide range of spinal pathologies as well as using minimally invasive techniques to allow patients to recover more rapidly and with less pain.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Hwang is also active is research, which focuses on improving clinical outcomes in spine surgery, increasing access to care for vulnerable populations, and the incorporation of new technologies into the practice of surgery.   Widely published in more than dozen academic journals, Dr. Hwang has received grant funding from the UCSF Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations for his research in the implementation wearable activity tracking.

Dr. Hwang graduated with an A.B. in Public Policy from Duke University.  He attended medical school Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He continued his training at UCSF, where he also completed his residency in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, serving as chief resident in his final year.  

Following residency, Dr. Hwang completed one of the most prestigious clinical fellowships in spine surgery at the Harvard Combined Spine Surgery Fellowship in Boston, at which he trained broadly and comprehensively under the tutelage of neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons.

Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Hwang was on faculty as a spine surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He enjoys running, cycling, and spending time outdoors with his wife and two children.
