Lindsay Orbeta shares evidence-based tips to help women maintain strength and health during perimenopause and menopause.

SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 12, 2025) — Lindsay Orbeta, MS, RD, a sports dietitian at the UCSF Women’s Sports Medicine Center, shared science-backed nutrition and training advice in the Aug. 11, 2025, edition of the San Francisco Chronicle for women navigating perimenopause and menopause. Supported by the UCSF Women’s Sports Medicine Center, Orbeta focuses on helping women protect muscle, bone health and metabolic function through tailored lifestyle strategies.

“Don’t starve yourself, and do strength training,” Orbeta said. “Many women try to fight midlife weight gain by eating less, but undereating puts women at greater risk of losing muscle. Everything we’re trying to do is protect that muscle.”

The article highlights her expert guidance on fueling and training strategies tailored to the physiological changes women experience in midlife. She also discussed the benefits of heavy strength training to support the central nervous system as estrogen levels decline and to counter age-related muscle loss.
