SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 4, 2026) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has once again been recognized among the nation's premier orthopaedic programs, earning the No. 6 national ranking in the 2026–27 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings. The program also ranks No. 2 in California and No. 1 in the San Francisco metro area, reflecting UCSF's longstanding commitment to exceptional patient care, groundbreaking research, and world-class education.

U.S. News & World Report evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide each year, measuring clinical outcomes, patient experience and structural factors to determine which institutions provide the highest standard of care for complex medical conditions and procedures. Rankings are based on publicly available data, including outcomes from both traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage populations.
In addition to the orthopaedics recognition, UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center has been named to the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll for adult care for the 30th consecutive year, reflecting excellence across a broad range of specialties, procedures, and conditions.
