Dr. Brophy presented the impact of intra-articular injury on the biology of the knee
San Francisco (January 28, 2025) – The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery was honored to host its first guest speaker of 2025 in the Grand Rounds series: Dr. Robert Brophy, professor of orthopaedic surgery and chief of the Division of Sports Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Brophy presented his research on the Impact of Intra-Articular Injury on the Biology of the Knee.

The event was held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in Genentech Hall - Byers Auditorium at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus.
About Dr. Robert Brophy
Dr. Robert Brophy is a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon and researcher at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to his role as chief of the Sports Medicine Service and director of the Orthopaedic Clinical Research Center, he serves as the chief medical officer for St. Louis City SC (Major League Soccer). Dr. Brophy specializes in treating shoulder and knee injuries, caring for athletes at all levels. He has been recognized as one of St. Louis’ Best Doctors since 2009 and as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2019.
His research includes more than 350 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on improving patient care and outcomes, particularly for knee injuries such as ACL tears and meniscus damage. Dr. Brophy has received numerous accolades, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s Cabaud Award and the NFL Physicians Society’s Arthur C. Rettig Award. He has held prominent leadership positions, such as serving as the director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Washington University and on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
Dr. Brophy’s commitment to research and education extends to his role as vice president of the Washington University Medical Center Alumni Association, deputy editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and co-chair of the AAOS Clinical Practice Guidelines for knee-related conditions. His clinical interests include ACL/PCL reconstructions, cartilage repair, and meniscus surgery, with a particular focus on soccer injuries, influenced by his own experience as a former collegiate and professional soccer player.
