The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery welcomes Dr. Hunter Bohlen to its orthopaedic trauma team. Dr. Bohlen joins as an Assistant Clinical Professor and will lead a new orthopaedic trauma service at Marin General Hospital, expanding access to UCSF orthopaedic trauma care in the North Bay.
About Hunter Bohlen, MD, MBA
Education
Dr. Bohlen earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He received both his medical degree and Master of Business Administration from Tulane University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Tulane 34 Award, the university’s highest graduate honor recognizing 34 exemplary students across its undergraduate and professional programs.
He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine, where he served as Academic Chief Resident, followed by fellowship training in orthopaedic trauma at Stanford University Medical Center. He is board-eligible through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and licensed to practice medicine in California. Dr. Bohlen sees patients at MarinHealth in San Rafael and Zuckerberg San Francisco General.
Clinical Care
Dr. Bohlen specializes in the surgical management of traumatic injuries involving the extremities, hip, and pelvis. His clinical expertise includes periarticular fractures and complex injuries involving the elbow, shoulder, hip, pelvis, and acetabulum, with a particular interest in fracture fixation and biomechanics. His approach emphasizes individualized treatment designed to restore function and support recovery after fracture. At Marin General Hospital, Dr. Bohlen will lead the development of a new orthopaedic trauma service focused on clinical excellence and program growth while integrating with UCSF’s broader academic mission. His orthopaedic trauma training, leadership experience, and MBA background provide a strong foundation for building the new service and expanding UCSF’s orthopaedic trauma presence in the North Bay. Dr. Bohlen is also strongly committed to surgical education. At UCSF, he will continue to teach residents and fellows in fracture surgery.
Research Interests
Dr. Bohlen’s research interests include orthopaedic trauma, fracture morphology, biomechanics, and clinical outcomes. He has contributed to multicenter studies and has authored or co-authored research across a broad range of orthopaedic topics. His recent work includes research examining outcomes and morphology of tibial plateau fractures, as well as studies involving cartilage restoration, posterior tibial slope measurement, and other aspects of musculoskeletal care. Dr. Bohlen plans to integrate clinical research with the development of the Marin trauma service, creating opportunities to study an expanding patient population and contribute to UCSF’s academic mission. His connection to UCSF research began earlier in his career through work with Dr. Lisa Lattanza, and he looks forward to continuing that research mission as a member of the faculty.
Dr. Bohlen will see patients at Marin General Hospital, managing acutely injured patients and complex musculoskeletal injury referrals.
