Celebrating the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute at ZSFG

February 27, 2026

In February, the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI) at ZSFG celebrated 17 years of service and support to the Bay Area community and beyond – providing complete musculoskeletal services as well as subspecialties including trauma, spine, sports medicine, foot and ankle, hand, arthroplasty, pediatrics, and orthotics and prosthetics. As the only level-1 trauma hospital serving San Francisco, this team is essential to the recovery and well-being of patients after they’ve experienced a traumatic event.

Having the most extensive international outreach program and the largest number of trauma fellowship-trained and dual trauma-specialty-trained groups in North America serves as a model for other international programs. OTI is an integrated clinical-research program that has grown from 10 clinical and 1 research full-time faculty members since its founding to 22 clinical and 5 research faculty members currently.

Dr. Ted Miclau, Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Institute and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at ZSFG, shares, “The care we provide is essential and outstanding – and that is in large part thanks to the team we have here at OTI. Every day, the team comes in and is just excited to be around each other, working together to help the community, no matter their situation, through the clinic and through research. That is OTI. We’re very excited for another 17 years of growth.”
