April 14th is AAOS Research Capitol Hill Days - Advocacy Day.
Chelsea Bahney, PhD, along with other members of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) visited Capitol Hill to advocate for improved funding for Musculoskeletal Research and support of a bill aimed at supporting Junior Investigators, including clinician scientists and PhD researchers. Dr. Bahney had the privilege of meeting with California Congress members: Rep. Ted Lieu, Rep. Barbara Lee, Rep. David Valadao, Rep. Jared Huffman, Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard; Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Barbara Boxer. The orthopaedic community, comprised of physicians, researchers, and patients, urges Congress to appropriate $34.5 billion in fiscal year 2017 for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Additionally, we recommend that Congress support the Next Generation Researcher Act (S.2014/H.R.3466), to improve opportunities for new researchers, promote earlier research independence; strengthen mentorship programs, enhance diversity efforts, and help new researchers obtain renewal funding.
