The UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery is pleased to announce that Stefano Bini, MD, has accepted the position of Chief Technology Officer within the Department.
“This strategic appointment represents the Department’s commitment to continuously enhancing leadership talent, which we believe is very important for our long-term growth,” said Dr. Thomas P. Vail, MD, chair of the Department. “I am confident that Dr. Bini will be a force from whom we can learn and be inspired.”
In his new role, Dr. Bini will be responsible for leading all aspects of the Department’s technology vision and development. As Chief Technology Officer, his primary focus will be advancing the overall direction and development of the Department’s technology infrastructure, providing mentorship to faculty, trainees and staff, and ensuring operational excellence with the highest level of quality assurance in the Department’s digital endeavors.
About Dr. Bini
Dr. Bini is a professor of clinical orthopedic surgery specializing in total joint arthroplasty with a special interest in knee replacement. Academically, his primary interests are knee arthroplasty surgical techniques, clinical outcomes, and digital health technology as applied to musculoskeletal care.
With respect to digital orthopedics, Dr. Bini is a member of the UCSF Center for Digital Health Innovation, and he is founder and chair of the UCSF Digital Orthopedics Conference (DOCSF), an annual technology symposium hosted by the Department that brings thought leaders in the fields of healthcare, technology, policy and design thinking together to work on bridging digital health and clinical orthopaedics.
Dr. Bini also serves on committees for two national orthopedic organizations (AAHKS and AAOS), and he is an associate editor for Arthroplasty Today. He has recently authored a book on change management in healthcare, has co-authored more than 30 papers in major orthopaedic journals, and has delivered more than 100 lectures and keynote presentations on both clinical and digital orthopedics.
Prior to UCSF, Dr. Bini gained administrative experience working at Kaiser Permanente, at which he held several leadership positions, including Chief of Orthopaedics, Associate Physician in Chief for Surgical Services, as well as serving in regional positions on teams overseeing surgical care in more than 20 hospitals. Dr. Bini was also a recipient of the California Health Care Foundation’s Leadership Fellowship, and has received several awards including a Resident Teaching Award and the peer-elected Kaiser Permanente James O. Johnston Award for Leadership.
Dr. Bini received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, and completed his medical training at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He then completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCSF, and following with a research fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at the Rizzoli Institute in Bologna, Italy.
