SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 29, 2019) -- Brian T. Feeley, MD, an orthopedic surgeon within the UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been named Section Chief of the Division of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery.

“Dr. Feeley brings a tremendous wealth of experience to leading his team,” said Dr. Thomas P. Vail, MD, chair of the Department. “His commitment to patient care, as well as his passion for research and mentoring, sets the standard for physician excellence. The Department is thrilled to have him lead his colleagues.”

In his new role, Dr. Feeley will be responsible for providing the vision and leadership in practice of sports medicine at UCSF.

About Dr. Feeley

Dr. Feeley received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Stanford University, and he completed his residency at the UCLA Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder service at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He joined the faculty of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2008, and currently serves as a Professor in Residence.

Dr. Feeley's clinical focus is on athletic injuries of the shoulder and knee. In the shoulder, he treats rotator cuff tears/impingement, shoulder instability and labral tears, clavicle fractures, shoulder arthritis and shoulder replacement with reverse shoulder arthroplasty. In the knee, he treats ACL and other ligament injuries, meniscus tears, cartilage injuries, and early arthritis.

“Dr. Feeley’s finely honed skills in treating patients with shoulder or knee injuries is particularly remarkable,” said Dr. C. Benjamin Ma, MD,  the current chief of Sports Medicine who will be taking a new leadership role as Vice Chair of Adult Clinical Operations for the Department. “He is also one of the leaders in studying the process of muscle and tendon injuries.  His innovative approach will change our ability to take care of these common musculoskeletal problems.”

A prolific researcher, Dr. Feeley has published more than 170 peer-reviewed articles, review studies, and book chapters, as well as a book on rotator cuff injuries.  He performs clinical research on common shoulder and knee problems, and through his laboratory, the Feeley-Liu Laboratory for Stem Cell Regeneration and Translational Research, he has been evaluating how stem cells residing within muscle result in changes to muscle tissue, and how to stimulate these cells to differentiate in ways to improve muscle function. In addition, he has been the Chair of the Department’s Research Committee, and he serves as a lead mentor to residents, fellows and younger faculty members on developing research projects. He serves as editor-in-chief to Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine, and basic science editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

As an educator, Dr. Feeley has received several awards for excellence in teaching at UCSF.  Amongst his leadership roles, he serves on the Education Committee for Residents, was the director of the Department’s Grand Rounds program, and has mentored many students — from high school, college, medical, graduate, and post-doctorate fellows — on their research projects.  He is also firmly committed to continuing medical education, and gives lectures often to educate primary care providers and other health care providers on evidence-based medicine.
