About Mark Chu Xu, MD
Dr Mark Xu is a dual-fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic trauma and spine surgery. He cares for patients with complex traumatic injuries of the upper and lower extremities, pelvis, and spine. He also provides comprehensive care for the full spectrum of degenerative spinal conditions involving the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine (such as spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, cervical myelopathy), disc herniations, infection, tumor, and revision/reconstructive spinal surgery. His areas of expertise include minimally-invasive spinal surgery and computer-assisted spinal surgery.
He takes a comprehensive and individualized approach to patient care, emphasizing shared decision-making for treatment plans. He works with a multi-disciplinary team to explore all non-surgical treatment options. If surgery is planned, Dr Xu employs safe and effective surgical techniques to optimize outcomes.
Dr Xu completed his medical school and orthopedic surgery residency in his hometown in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He then completed an orthopedic trauma fellowship at the Vancouver General Hospital/University of British Columbia, followed by a combined orthopedic and neurosurgical complex spine surgery fellowship at the Toronto Western Hospital/University of Toronto.
Dr Xu’s research focuses on clinical outcomes and biomechanical studies comparing surgical fixation techniques. He has received numerous grants for his studies including an AO Trauma North America Fellow Research Grant. He has presented his research at national and international meetings including at the Global Spine Congress, the Orthopedic Trauma Association, Canadian Orthopedic Association, and Canadian Spine Society.
He is board certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and board eligible by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. Additionally, he has successfully completed the AO Spine Global Spine Diploma Examination.
