Designation from The Joint Commission places UCSF among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for excellence in complex spine care.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 18, 2026 — The UCSF Spine Center has been awarded The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery, recognizing high standards in quality, safety, and coordinated, multidisciplinary care.

With this designation, UCSF is one of five hospitals in California and 46 nationwide to receive the certification.

The recognition reflects more than a decade of collaboration between orthopaedic surgery and neurological surgery, alongside teams in anesthesiology, rehabilitation, nursing, and quality and safety. Together, these groups have implemented evidence-based care pathways, standardized patient education, and ongoing outcomes tracking through national registries.

For patients and referring physicians, the certification underscores the Spine Center’s focus on team-based expertise, data-driven care, and continuous improvement.
