SAN FRANCISCO — Nov. 25, 2024 — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Division of Orthotics and Prosthetics celebrated the success of the 2024 Bionic Mile and 5K at Crissy Field. Supported by enthusiastic UCSF team members, the event united over 500 participants, volunteers, and supporters. The day highlighted our dedication to empowering patients and building connections beyond the clinic.
Held on Sunday, Oct. 27, the event showcased UCSF’s dedication to community engagement and patient care. Leading the charge from UCSF’s Orthotics and Prosthetics team, Josh Unterman inspired participants by running the course, infusing the event with his positivity and determination. On-course assistance was provided by Tyler Haislip and Adrian Ravitz, while Matt Leo manned the UCSF information table, engaging attendees and fostering connections.
“This event embodies UCSF’s PRIDE values, showcasing community, compassion, and collaboration,” said Dr. C. Benjamin Ma, Chair of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “Our team’s dedication and ability to inspire others reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence and integrity.”
Matthew Garibaldi, Director of the UCSF Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, emphasized the event’s alignment with UCSF’s mission. “We’re dedicated to helping patients rediscover independence and achieve their goals,” Garibaldi said. “Participating in this event allows us to extend our compassion and collaboration beyond the clinic, building meaningful connections that empower us to improve lives.”
The event was organized by the Bionic Project, a nonprofit devoted to promoting inclusivity and empowerment for individuals of all abilities. UCSF is proud to partner with this inspiring organization. Mark your calendars for next year’s race, already set for Oct. 26, 2025.
