SAN FRANCISCO (June 22, 2026) — Faculty, residents and staff gathered at UCSF Mount Zion Hospital on June 18 to celebrate the opening of the UCSF Mount Zion Wellness Center, a dedicated space designed to support the health and well-being of the people who care for patients every day.
Approximately 20 members of the Mount Zion community attended the 7 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony, which included remarks from project leaders, a tour of the facility, and a coffee-and-bagel reception.

Located on the Mount Zion campus, the wellness center provides surgeons, residents, nurses, technicians and all hospital staff with access to fitness equipment and dedicated space for exercise, recovery and stress relief. The facility includes a treadmill, rowing machine, Peloton bike, free weights and a yoga area.
The project was championed over the past two years by Saam Morshed, MD, PhD, MPH, an orthopaedic surgeon and Surgical Director of UCSF Mount Zion Hospital, who worked with colleagues across UCSF and the Mount Zion Health Fund to bring the vision to reality.
“Hospitals are built to care for patients. But every day, there are people caring for those patients,” said Dr. Morshed. “Surgeons, nurses, technicians, residents and staff are the people behind every procedure, every recovery and every life changed. This wellness center was created for them.”
Dr. Ryan Halvorson, an orthopaedic surgery resident, played a key role in coordinating the final setup and launch of the facility. Alongside fellow trainees and colleagues, he helped lead the delivery, assembly and organization of the fitness equipment that transformed the space from concept to reality.
“With fitness equipment, dedicated workout space and resources that support physical and mental well-being, the center reflects a simple idea: caring for others starts with caring for ourselves,” said Dr. Morshed.
The center represents a growing commitment across UCSF Health to support the physical and mental well-being of healthcare workers who operate in high-intensity clinical environments.
“When we invest in the well-being of the people who provide care, everyone benefits,” added Dr. Morshed. “This space is an investment in the teams who show up every day to care for others.”
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery extends its gratitude to the Mount Zion Health Fund and the many faculty, staff, residents and volunteers whose support made the project possible.
The Mount Zion Wellness Center is now open and available for use by Mount Zion hospital staff and trainees.
