Edward Hsiao, MD, PhD, named director of UCSF MSK Center’s Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology and Medicine


Renowned physician-scientist and metabolic bone specialist succeeds Tamara Alliston, PhD, to lead UCSF’s interdisciplinary musculoskeletal research and education programs 

 

SAN FRANCISCO (November 5, 2025) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is proud to announce that Edward Hsiao, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine, in residence, in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at UCSF, has been appointed director of the UCSF Musculoskeletal Center's Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology and Medicine (CCMBM), effective immediately. Dr. Hsiao will lead the center’s mission to advance musculoskeletal research, foster transdisciplinary collaboration, and support education and services critical to the field. The CCMBM is supported by the NIH Center Core Grants (P30), enabling our researchers to advance musculoskeletal science and translational discoveries.

 

“Having been involved with CCMBM since 2016, I am very excited to take on this new role. I am honored to follow Dr. Tamara Alliston, who has shaped this program into the vibrant center it is today,” Dr. Hsiao said. “We are deeply grateful to Dr. Alliston for her leadership, vision, and years of dedication to the center, and I am looking forward to continuing to grow the CCMBM’s impact and successes in all aspects of musculoskeletal research.” 

 

As director of the CCMBM, Dr. Hsiao will guide the scientific vision for the center, fostering collaborations among basic scientists, clinicians, and data researchers. He is excited to continue efforts to expand programs that support translational musculoskeletal research, particularly by supporting team science across disciplines and integrating novel technologies to support cutting-edge research. He is also committed to mentorship for junior and early-career investigators. Dr. Hsiao will oversee the center’s grant support services, funding opportunities, shared research resources, and events. He will also represent the center to institutional leaders, national partners, and sponsor agencies to elevate its impact and visibility.
