Dr. Ishaan Swarup Named Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF

Dr. Nirav Pandya steps into a new departmental leadership role after leading the division since 2019

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 17, 2025 — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery announced that Dr. Ishaan Swarup has been appointed chief of pediatric orthopaedic surgery, succeeding Dr. Nirav Pandya, who led the division since 2019. Under Dr. Pandya’s leadership, the pediatric orthopaedic program grew in clinical care, research, and education, earning national recognition and providing outstanding care for children and families.

Dr. Pandya will continue contributing to the department in a new leadership role as associate vice chair of systems and operations, focusing on departmental initiatives and supporting faculty development across all divisions.

About Ishaan Swarup, MD

Dr. Swarup is a fellowship-trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who treats infants, children, and young adults with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, with special expertise in scoliosis, spinal disorders, hip conditions, and pediatric trauma. He earned his undergraduate degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley, and his medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr. Swarup completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Swarup is active in research, focusing on pediatric trauma, hip preservation, and pediatric spine surgery. He serves as associate director of the pediatric orthopaedic surgery fellowship and is a member of the UCSF Hip Preservation Center. He is also active in national professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.
