San Francisco (July 8, 2026) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery rounds out the academic year with two visiting speakers in June 2026. The Grand Rounds audience is generally comprised of faculty, learners, and staff. Occasionally, participants include community members and partner organizations.
The past year’s program provided participants with comprehensive exposure to all specialties within orthopaedic surgery. Presenters included departmental faculty, PGY4 resident physicians, faculty from other departments, and visiting professors from other prestigious institutions. The constant stream of visiting professors and different perspectives facilitated collaboration for participants. Learning about practices at other institutions also challenged participants to improve and optimize daily practices.
On June 17, Kathryn E. Ackerman, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Women’s Health, Sports & Performance Institute, gave a talk titled, “Paradigm Shifts in Sports Medicine and Sports Science for Female Athletes across the Lifespan.” This talk covered female-specific considerations for female athlete-based research, prevention of REDs, and incorporating non-orthopaedic issues into the patient visit.
On June 24, DJ Kennedy, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt University, gave a talk titled, “Are Steroids Effective for Low Back Pain?” This talk covered the effects of heterogeneity on outcomes data, appropriate categorization of data for pain research, and how patient history affects the interpretation of results.
