Honor recognizes significant contributions to spine care, research, education and professional service.
SAN FRANCISCO (June 18, 2026) — Dr. Sigurd H. Berven, professor in residence in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been selected as an inaugural Distinguished Fellow of the North American Spine Society (DFNS), a new designation recognizing members who have made significant contributions to the field of spine care and demonstrated sustained service to the Society.
Established by the North American Spine Society (NASS), the Distinguished Fellow designation honors leaders whose careers have advanced the science, education and practice of spine care. The DFNS designation recognizes members who have demonstrated distinguished achievement in spine care, scholarship, leadership and service to the profession. Dr. Berven is among the first group of physicians selected for this recognition.
“I am honored to receive this recognition from the North American Spine Society,” said Dr. Berven. “NASS has played an important role throughout my career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of spine care through education, research and service.”
Dr. Berven is an internationally recognized spine surgeon, educator and researcher whose work has advanced the treatment of pediatric and adult spinal disorders. Throughout his career, he has contributed extensively to clinical outcomes research, surgical innovation and the education of future spine surgeons.
“Dr. Berven’s selection as an inaugural Distinguished Fellow of NASS reflects his longstanding commitment to advancing spine care through clinical excellence, research and education,” said Dr. Rajiv Sethi, chief of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at UCSF. “This recognition is a testament to the impact he has had on patients, trainees and the broader spine community.”
Dr. Berven will be formally recognized during the inaugural Distinguished Fellow of NASS Convocation Ceremony at the 2026 NASS Annual Meeting, scheduled for Oct. 14 in San Antonio, Texas.
Founded in 1985, the North American Spine Society is a multidisciplinary medical society dedicated to advancing quality spine care through education, research and advocacy.
