UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery celebrates graduating residents, fellows, and faculty achievements at annual Bones Ball
SAN FRANCISCO (May 19, 2025) — The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery hosted Bones Ball 2025 on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the InterContinental San Francisco, located in the city’s South of Market district. Surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues, the department honored the graduating residents and fellows, recognized faculty achievements, and reflected on a year of mentorship, growth, and excellence.

Honoring Dr. Hubert Kim
At this year’s Bones Ball, the department proudly recognized Dr. Hubert Kim for his 21 years of service as Residency Program Director. Dr. Kim’s leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment have shaped generations of orthopaedic surgeons and elevated the UCSF training program to national prominence. His dedication to education and excellence has left a lasting legacy in the department and beyond.

Faculty Awards and Honors
At Bones Ball 2025, the Department honored a distinguished faculty for their exceptional commitment to education, mentorship, and compassionate care.
The James Johnston Teaching Award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding dedication to the training of residents and fellows. The Faculty Mentor Award celebrates those whose guidance has made a meaningful impact on the personal and professional development of trainees. The James Morris Compassionate Physician Award honors a faculty member who exemplifies empathy, integrity, and excellence in patient care.
This year’s honorees include:

- Dr. Alfred Kuo — James Morris Compassionate Physician Award
- Dr. Utku Kandemir — James Johnston Teaching Award
