About Michael Coughlin, MD

Michael J. Coughlin M.D. is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle deformities and reconstruction. While currently the director of The Saint Alphonsus Coughlin Foot and Ankle Clinic in Boise, Idaho, he also is a member of the UCSF Orthopaedic Department and consults on Foot and Ankle problems at the Orthopaedic Institute.

Dr. Coughlin graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School, and then did his Orthopaedic training at UCSF. He then served a fellowship under the direction of Roger A. Mann, M.D. in Oakland, California. He returned to his home in Boise, Idaho and has been in active practice there before taking a part- time job at UCSF.

He is the editor of several textbooks on Foot and Ankle surgery, including the recently published Surgery of the Foot and Ankle, 9th edition. He has published over 100 peer review articles, and delivered over 500 scientific addresses both in the US and around the world.

He is past president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and past president of the International Federation of Foot and Ankle Societies.

Along with Roger Mann, he introduced the STAR ankle to the United States, a project that took 13 years to complete.

Dr. Coughlin interests in Orthopaedics vary from forefoot reconstruction to complex ankle and hindfoot deformities.

He resides in Boise, Idaho where he enjoys out of door acitivies such as skiing, hiking, and fly-fishing; he consults monthly at UCSF at the Orthopaedic Institute.
