Our mission
To improve the health of populations living in resource-constrained areas of the world through education, service, research, and advocacy focused on the provision of surgical, obstetrical, and anesthesia services, as well as, to support capacity development and skills in these disciplines.

Our work
- JHCGS-Ortho seeks to provide education to orthopaedic surgeons in practice and in training in Low-to Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) with limited educational resources.
- JHCGS-Ortho partners with the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma and Anaesthesia Care (The G4 Alliance) which is committed to advocating for the neglected surgical patient and is driven by a mission to provide a collective voice for increased access to safe, essential, and timely surgical, obstetric, trauma, and anaesthesia care as part of universal health coverage.
Our projects
Ethiopia
- James Ficke, MD, James Cobey, MD and Babar Shafiq, MD are part of a collaborative effort which teaches didactics and surgical skills for the orthopaedic residency program at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ghana
- Jack Ingari, MD has worked with the St. Johns Hospital in Ghana for surgical outreach and teaching local residents and staff in Hand and Upper Extremity surgery.
Thailand
- Erik Hasenboehler, MD and Babar Shafiq, MD host research fellows from Mahidol University, Bangkok. The research fellowship accepts young orthopaeeic surgeons having recently completed training for a two-year experience at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital. This fellowship is in its 5th year having produced several publications on topics in orthopaedic trauma. They also share their experiences giving lectures at the Thailand Orthopaedic Trauma Annual Conference in Thailand.
Tanzania
- Jim Ficke, MD has partnered with the Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (IGOT) at the University of California, San Francisco to teach at the annual international SMART (Surgical Management and Reconstructive Training) Course in Tanzania.
