UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery appoints C. Benjamin Ma, MD, as Vice Chair of Adult Clinical Operations

SAN FRANCISCO -- The UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery is pleased to announce that Dr. C. Benjamin Ma, MD, has accepted the position of Vice Chair of Adult Clinical Operations within the Department.

“We are so pleased to have Dr. Ma join the Department's senior management team to strengthen our clinical operations,” said Dr. Thomas P. Vail, MD, chair of the Department. “With his vast knowledge and tremendous experience, Dr. Ma has a strong track record in successfully leading service site directors and their teams to achieve the adult clinical services goals and initiatives.”

In his new role, Dr. Ma will be responsible for providing the vision and leadership in the overall adult clinical operational activities for the orthopaedic surgery department across the health system.  As Vice Chair of Adult Clinical Operations, his primary focus will be to advise on the planning and expansion of inpatient and outpatient services in the orthopaedic adult population in cooperation with service chiefs.

About Dr. Ma

Dr. Ma is a Professor in Residence of orthopedic surgery and the chief of the UCSF Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service. His special interests include sports medicine, arthroscopic shoulder surgeries for rotator cuff repairs and shoulder stabilization, shoulder replacement, knee ligament reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage resurfacing procedures. Academically, Dr. Ma has been a NIH funded investigator on cartilage imaging and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of ACL injured knees.  He is also a founding member of the multicenter outcome orthopaedic network (MOON) shoulder group which investigates the management of shoulder problems.

With respect to clinical operations, Dr. Ma joined UCSF in August 2003. He has been the Chief of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service since 2007, Dr. Ma supervises clinical operations, research investigation and outreach for the section.  Under Dr. Ma’s leadership, the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service has grown into a national and international center of excellence – serving patients who come to UCSF for exceptional care. The service has clinical fellowships in both Sports Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine.  The service also has frequent international fellows that participate in their educational and research program.

Additionally, Dr. Ma has served as team physician to several athletic organizations, such as the UC Berkeley Men’s Basketball Team and San Francisco's Abraham Lincoln High School.  He has also served as the medical director for several marathons and triathlon events throughout the Bay Area.

Dr. Ma completed his undergraduate education in bioelectrical engineering at Brown University and went on to earn his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also completed a one-year musculoskeletal research fellowship. Following his residency, Ma completed a second fellowship in shoulder and knee surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
