Department embarks on Strategic Initiatives

SAN FRANCISCO (April 15, 2019) – The UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery recently deployed its five-year strategic plan in an effort to continue successful growth and excellence. In the last quarter, highlights have included filling seven vice chairs and a chief technology officer in strategy leadership, as well as10 service chief positions. A leadership development program is also tentatively set to launch in late spring/early summer 2019.

Highlights among the strategic vice chairs include:

Academic Affairs and Diversity:  “We have formed a Global Health task force to work under Academic Affairs,” said Lisa Lattanza, MD, Vice Chair, Academic Affairs. “The task force members are Coleen Sabatini, MD, MPH, Rosie Wustrack, MD, Dave Shearer, MD, and Saam Morshed, MD, MPH, PhD. This group will work with the Vice Chair to set and achieve the goals of expanding our service and commitment to underserved populations at home and abroad. This will start with a survey and cataloging of current department activities which will be made accessible to all faculty to foster collaboration and expansion.”

Dr. Lattanza, who is also Vice Chair of the Department’s Diversity Committee, recently announced committee members Melissa Zimel, MD, Nirav Pandya, MD, Lionel Metz, MD, Ravi Brar, MD, Rosie Wustrack, MD, and Coleen Sabatini, MD, MPH.

“The Diversity Committee will be looking at results from faculty culture and climate surveys, along with Dr. Kristin Livingston to help set the agenda for faculty development for the coming year,” Dr. Lattanza added. “Multiple other projects are under development as well.”

Adult Clinical Operations:  “I have been meeting with the Section Chiefs and discussing their goals, strategies and challenges and how the Department can assist them with those needs,” said C. Benjamin Ma, MD, Vice Chair, Adult Clinical Operations. “In addition, I have begun gathering information on each of the surrounding clinical sites and analyzing the data to help Orthopaedic Surgery growth in our clinics.”

Education: “I’m determining what resources are currently available to our Faculty to become better educators,” said Hubert Kim, MD, Vice Chair, Education. “Nicola Sequeira will be sending a needs assessment to Faculty to determine the priorities needed to teach.”

Orthopaedic Trauma Institute:  “The Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (IGOT) is in finishing stages of three- and five-year strategic plan, which includes funding of initiatives,” said Theodore Miclau, III, MD, Vice Chair, Orthopaedic Trauma Institute.Plans for future research labs at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital are currently being developed in the new research and academic building campus planning.”

“Orthopaedics is playing a critical role in the both the steering and governance committees,” Dr. Miclau added.  The UCSF Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery Trauma and Spine Services are currently working on plans for an integrated spine service approach at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and at Regional Medical Center of San Jose.”

Quality and Safety: “Currently, we are building an infrastructure for real time assessment of clinical performance data with Matt Callahan,” said Bobby Tay, MD Vice Chair, Quality and Safety. “We are also working with the Office of Population Health and Accountable Care concerning quality measure for affiliate faculty as we bring on new partners, working with perioperative leadership shared interdepartmental quality goals.”

At monthly faculty meetings, strategy leadership will be presenting updates.  Most recently, Stefano Bini, MD, Chief Technology Officer, presented at the April 2019 faculty meeting.  Jeff Lotz, PhD, Vice Chair, Research, will present at the May 2019 faculty meeting.
