Anthony Wiggins, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Arthritis and Joint Replacement within the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He specializes in hip and knee arthroplasty and brings a comprehensive background in joint reconstruction, with a strong commitment to advancing patient-centered care and promoting equitable access within orthopaedics.

Clinical care

Dr. Wiggins specializes in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of hip and knee conditions, with expertise in primary and revision total joint arthroplasty, robotic-assisted joint replacement, and complex reconstructive procedures. He primarily treats osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, and other degenerative joint disorders, focusing on individualized care plans that optimize function, early mobility, and quality of life. Dr. Wiggins integrates evidence-based surgical techniques with patient education and rehabilitation strategies to support long-term outcomes.

Dr. Wiggins has been actively involved in medical education throughout his training, serving as a resident education representative at UCSF, mentoring medical students and residents, and participating in curriculum development. Education and training

Dr. Wiggins earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he earned multiple honors, including induction into the AOA Medical Honor Society, as well as the Bowman Scholar Award for academic excellence. Dr. Wiggins completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCSF, followed by a clinical fellowship in adult reconstruction and joint replacement at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Dr. Wiggins’ research focuses on arthroplasty outcomes, healthcare disparities, and equitable care in orthopaedics. His work has examined how patient factors such as primary language influence outcomes in total joint replacement, aiming to improve care for all patients. He has also studied demographic differences among medical and athletic staff in professional sports, contributing to national initiatives that promote inclusion in medicine. Dr. Wiggins is committed to mentoring future physicians and supporting underserved communities through education and clinical outreach.

Dr. Wiggins is board-eligible, licensed to practice medicine in California and New York and will see patients at MarinHealth Orthopedic Care in San Rafael.
