Anna Buehler, MD

Anna Buehler, MD, is as an assistant professor in the Division of Primary Care Sports Medicine. She joins UCSF from the VA San Diego Healthcare System, where she practiced primary care and sports medicine and taught medical students and internal medicine residents.

Clinical Care

Board-certified in internal medicine and sports medicine, Dr. Buehler provides care for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and sports-related medical concerns. She cares for high school-aged patients and adults. She has clinical interests in women’s sports medicine, caring for underrepresented populations and helping people remain active throughout their lives.

She performs ultrasound-guided injections and incorporates exercise into care to support her patients’ overall health and longevity. At UCSF, she sees patients at the Orthopaedic Institute and Redwood Shores.

Research Interests

Dr. Buehler’s research focuses on health disparities, gender representation and the care of women athletes across the lifespan. Her previous work has also examined dietary interventions for weight-related conditions and decision-making in palliative care. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including The American Journal of Sports Medicine and JAMA.

Education and Training

Dr. Buehler earned a bachelor’s degree in science, technology and society from Stanford University and her medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. She completed her internal medicine residency and fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Colorado.

Dr. Buehler is an experienced medical educator who has taught in clinical and classroom settings. She has presented at meetings of the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and has led American College of Physicians workshops to strengthen musculoskeletal evaluation skills among primary care clinicians. Her teaching interests include diagnostic evaluation and procedural training.

Dr. Buehler's commitment to athlete care extends beyond the clinic. She has served as a team physician for the University of Colorado Boulder football and women’s volleyball teams, the Colorado Avalanche, the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Rapids and Denver-area high school football programs. At UCSF, she is part of the UCSF Women’s Sports Medicine Center and the UCSF Sports Concussion Program. She also supports student-athletes at Mission High School through the UCSF PlaySafe Program.
