About Aiyush Bansal, MD, MASc
Aiyush Bansal, MD, MASc, is the Director of Research for the Spine Division in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Trained as both an engineer and a physician, Dr. Bansal leads a research program that works at the intersection of clinical medicine, engineering, and data science.
Dr. Bansal's current work involves inverse modeling using a genetic algorithm to generate surgical plans that meet a surgeon's alignment goals. He also studies predictive modeling of disc degeneration, the ergonomics of surgery using motion capture and electromyography, new methods to assess value in surgery, and biopsychosocial models that combine a patient's personality, clinical characteristics, and pharmacogenomics to guide personalized treatment.
Dr. Bansal works closely with surgeons to turn questions from the clinic and operating room into well-designed studies, and his work appears regularly in the spine literature. He is committed to training the next generation of researchers and mentors medical and graduate students as they develop their own work. He has presented at national and international meetings, including in Brazil, China, and Nepal. Before joining UCSF, he led spine research at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, and his earlier work ranged from biomedical engineering to a nationwide study of COVID-19 antibodies across Canada.
Outside of work, Dr. Bansal enjoys hiking, traveling, martial arts, and game design.
